V roce 1943 odvelely japonské okupační síly stovky amerických a evropských „příslušníků nepřátelských států“ do internačního tábora v čínské provincii Shantung. Lidé se tam nudili, prožívali pocit marnosti, vliv přelidnění a strach. Osobnosti se dostávaly do konfliktů a objevovaly se prudké výkyvy nálad. Nejostřejší střety vznikaly mezi podnikateli a misionáři, kteří sebou navzájem opovrhovali. Propukalo stále více sporů a malicherných hádek.

Přesto všechno však jeden muž přece jen dokázal překlenout propast mezi těmito dvěma skupinami. Byl to muž, kterého internovaní charakterizovali jako „člověka, jehož si všichni v táboře vážili, respektovali a milovali“ – Eric Liddell, misionář ze Skotska.
